My trip to Kek Lok Si Temple, Penang Island

It was the first day of our family vacation in this beautiful, island. We traveled from our hotel by car to visit one of Penang Island's largest and best known Buddhist temples located in hills of Ayer Itam. Kek Lok Si Temple that is derived from the Chinese word which carries the meaning of the "Temple of Supreme Bliss". During the olden days, the hills of Air Itam was a place for retreat of Taoist practitioners striving to achieve immortality.

Back during the days of my parents, they used to climb their way up all the way from the base of the hill to the temple. Today, roads were widen enabling visitors to drove all the way up, either to the top of the hill or halfway. We drove halfway up the hill. Upon entry, we were greeted by the majestic temple gate.

One of the prominent structures in the temple grounds, is the pagoda. This pagoda combines a Chinese octagonal base with a middle tier of Thai design and a Burmese crown, reflecting the temple's embrace of both Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism.

We walked around and found this mini pagoda at the temple grounds.

We took a mini tram to the top of the hill. Later in the evening, it started to slowly become cloudy, slightly drizzling. Luckily for us, we are almost at the end of our journey, the top of the hill.

Hmmmm.... Wondering what are the scarecrows doing here?

A really cute mini Buddha we found at the souvenirs shops.

According to many Penang locals, the temple is beautifully decorated during Chinese New Year with colourful lights. I sure hope to have to the chance to be here again especially during Chinese festive season.

Before we left we dropped by for the famous Penang Cuisine and Malaysian local delight Asam Laksa. This is one of the best Asam Laksa that you can find. They had been here for many generations.

We spoke to the boss, and he is very friendly. I am very happy that he is smiling in the camera as well.

A little sweet, a little sour and add together spicy, combines to make just the right ingredients for a perfect soup base and delicious laksa noodles. It does wonders to your taste buds.

In the count of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.....

... and they were all gone... into our stomachs of course! It has been a long time since my last Penang Laksa! We couldn't help to resist ordering a few more extra bowls. We really missed the laksa... left us really satisfied with our lunch.

It was early in the morning. I took a stroll along the beach before everyone is awake. Enjoyed the calm and cooling breeze. What a wonderful feeling to listen to soothing sound of waves that came gently crashing onto the rocks. Chilly, tinkling sensation of the cold water touching my feet.

Rainbow Spotted!

It was a long time since I see such beautiful skies near the place I live. It was in shades of blue, slightly purplish all over the housing area. A glimpse of a rainbow was spotted on the right. Hiding among the thick clouds.

Seeing the fascinating colours forget all my worries and feel so good. It reminds me of the song and the quote said by Lyman Frank Baum, " Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue, and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true". There's a saying that goes, "There's a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow" and all the lovely stories and wonderful adventures about a journey to find a rainbow.

It disappeared very soon in a few minutes. I hope you find the rainbow within you too. To live your dreams, to have faith and believe that there's always hope. May you be blessed with a wonderful, beautiful life.

Foh San Dim Sum Restaurant, Ipoh

Finally persuaded my parents to come over since the our very last family visit many years ago when Foh San was still in the old restaurant. Gave an assurance that time it had improved. We avoided here most of the time due to the crowd. Difficult to enjoy the good food that time, as customers were waiting beside, indicating you to leave as soon as possible after you eat so that they can have a seat too. Waiters and waitresses were too busy to serve as well.

This time we came during the weekday so it was less crowded. We enjoyed our meal with minimum fuss. My parents absolutely loved it. It was cosy and calm as we sat near the man made water fountain/water fall. Looks cleaner and more hygienic as well. Usually, it would be crowded here in the weekends. Come very early in the morning to avoid the crowd, maybe around 6.30am - 7.30am. Customers will be queuing even before 8 am.

We ordered our all time favourite dim sum dishes. Generally the dim sum was quite good, very authentic and traditional. They are many choices to choose from. The Har Gao (Prawn Dumpling) was the best. Super translucent dumpling skin that didn't break easily. Fresh big shrimps. Sadly, don't have a picture here. All of it disappeared right before our very eyes before I have the chance to take a photo...(giggles)..

Bubba Gump Shrimp, The Curve

Our first dining experience in Bubba Gump Shrimp was last year. Great ambiance, good service and food were words to describe our gastronomical feast. Hence, we decided to celebrate the new year in Bubba Gump Shrimp.That day was crowded. The restaurant was fully booked. Luckily we arrived early, we were placed on a waiting list but got our seat after a 15 minutes wait. The inside was full, so this time we sat outside. At the top floor, we enjoyed the soft and relaxing jazz music from ground floor.

Something that we must not missed are the their restaurant specialty - Shrimps!. We ordered a Set Dinner from the Festive Menu. At RM 69.90, it consist of a drink (Naughty and Nice Margarita), starter (Pear and Berry Salad), main course (Roasted Turkey), and dessert (Special Christmas Dessert). We got a few choices combination to choose from.

Naughty and Nice Margarita

My first taste of Margarita. Served chilled with salt at the brim of the glass. It was awesome! A little sweet and slightly sour at the same time.

Pear and Berry Salad - Fresh Greens, Strawberries, Pears, and grazed Pecans tossed in Raspberry Vinagrette.

We enjoy our salad very much, especially myself, who's a vege lover. It was really fresh and light, served with delicious salad dressing.

Bubba's Roasted Turkey Breast

The Turkey was okay but we didn't really enjoy the sweet gravy though.

Special Christmas Dessert

By the time the dessert arrive, we were really stuffed already! Hardly enough space for more. The Special Christmas Dessert served with strawberries, strawberry sauce, cream, ice-cream and pastry.

"......Of Course We Have Scampi!" RM 31.90 - Tender Shrimp Sautéed with capers in lemon - Garlic Butter served over a bed of Linguini.

Skywatch Friday - Ampang Lookout Point, KL City Night View

We were at Ampang for dinner in the Korean village. It was an impromptu decision to make a trip to Ampang Lookout Point, the place for the view of the entire Kuala Lumpur city.

We parked our car halfway of the hill and climbed all the way up. It was a short distance, we managed to reach the top after for only about 10 minutes. Once there, It was mesmerizing. A breathtaking sight that I could never forget.

"Always have the camera by side" .. . and it did paid well. Unfortunately, we forgot the tripod! It was quite a daunting task taking a photo in darkness. Having little to stabilize the shot with slow shutter release, we used the edge of the fence or pillar for support.

A day in Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur @ Pasar Seni/Petaling Street

Bright, colourful and bustling are some of the words to describe this vibrant town. Also known as "Chee Cheong Kai" as fondly called by the Malaysian Chinese. It is an area which never sleeps at the heart of the city, Kuala Lumpur. Being a photography enthusiast, I've took a journey down town to photograph the people and the culture at the streets. We took an lrt to the Pasar Seni station and had a strolled around the streets. It was just like we had imagined it, a town deeply immersed in Oriental culture, heritage and history.

A tree that grow in between stalls!

Ever wonder why the street is called "Chee Cheong Kai" by some of us? Looking back at history, the name originated to its roots as a tapioca-producing district. Undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist spots in Malaysia, it is filled with people from all walks of life, different countries and of course the Chinese.

With Chinese New Year (CNY) just around the corner (February 3rd 2011), stores are quickly filled with red, and other bright and colourful auspicious decorative goods. Streets had just begun the CNY decorations of bright red lanterns. We stopped by one of these stores to stock up decorative items our house in time to usher in the new year.

More and more creative lanterns this year. Traditionally back then was simple lanterns in red with auspicious idioms or words to blessed the family with happiness, wealth and good health for a wholesome and prosperous, new year. Wording were calligraphy or painted art or maybe printed. Something different this year in some of the lanterns, saw a lantern with peonies and mandarin oranges decorated on it as well as flower prints.

Peonies

Peonies are the symbol of love and romance for the Chinese. It is one of the purest flowers, the queen of all flowers.

After the new year shopping, we walked further down to the main street of Chinatown.... And it was truly a gastronomic feast! We found so many delicious, authentic Chinese Hawker food and finger foods. We will definitely find time to make a trip down here again.

Our first stop, Restoren Zhing Kong along Jalan Kasturi. Missing an "I" here at the street signs. The place for the famous and awesome beef noodles as well as other good food.

Not to forget is the stall we must come every time we go to Chinatown. The chee cheong fan served with the finest homemade, red coloured sauce.

We came across an old lady selling "mua chi" (mochi). This friendly "poh poh" (grandma) who passion in making these delicious glutinous rice dessert with peanuts had been selling for many years and vow to never retire.

We bought mixed flavours. Slightly larger than the ones we usually buy from "pasar malam".

Another delight here is the "Air Mata Kuching", great to quench the thirst and a remedy for heat due to the hot climate here.

Our trip was short but memorable. There's definitely more to Chinatown and its food, recipes of hundreds of years passed on from generations to generations. Unfortunately, we got to make a trip home and cut this journey short.

Fried Chicken, Yu Yu Ice @ Kedai Yao Yao Ping & Ayam Goreng

I stumbled across this restaurant while I was collecting information for my university assignment, a research about Pandamaran. It was told to me by a local friend that this is one of the best and most famous fried chicken and yu yu ice ("yao yao bing") in town. Situated opposite of SJK (C) Pandamaran B, it has a strikingly large and eye catching signboard.

Greeting us upon entry is the "kitchen" where the chickens were fried and yu yu ice was sold. Owner frying the delicious fried chickens (bottom).

"Bungkus? Makan?", asked the worker.

The fried chicken arrive hot on our tables. It's so crispy. Yum! Juicy and tender meat. Very similar to the conventional fried chicken you found in "pasar malam" (night market) and fast food chains. Harder flesh on certain parts for those who ordered chicken breast. Nevertheless, this is still among the best for casual snacks or tea time.

It was almost dinner, but we couldn't resist to order for more. There also have ayam percik here (malay style roasted chicken). Price depending on which part of the chicken, was around RM 2.50 per piece.

Yao Yao Ping was from RM 1.30.

It's like an extremely fine ice blended drink, lighter than ice cream. An instant relive from the hot weather! Ahhhh... .. Reminds me of the days chasing after the uncle in motorcycle who sells this. Flavours include Cendol, Red Bean, Sour Plum, Bubur Cha Cha, Mango, Lychee, Watermelon, etc. I tried the bubur cha cha and red bean at first was rather too sweet for me. Prefer mochana of all the flavours. If you love sour taste, try Sour Plum flavour, it's really so, so, so, so sour..

Wondrous Mille Crepe at Nadeje Café Sdn. Bhd.

I've been craving for cakes a long, long time. This was my second visit here and I can't help myself from satisfying my sweet tooth at Nadeje Sdn. Bhd, famous for its mille crepe or also known as "thousand layers cakes". Mille Crepe is a French cake made of many crepe layers. “Mille” means “a thousand” in French, implying the many layers of crepe used.

My first cake there was the Original Mille Crepe. The origin of Nadeje Mille Crepe, a cake made of custard cream with Tahitian Vanilla Beans mix with Fresh Cream. The layers worked wonders, with each melting smoothly in your mouth once you take a bite. The only thing that stays was the rich taste and aroma of the cakes.

I prefer Tiramisu and the original Mille Crepe the most. It's light and creamy, as light as feather.

Tiramisu - Rich profound taste of high quality Mascarpone cheese of Galbani, Italy.

Cafe - Moderately sweet and aromatic taste of roasted Italian Coffee cake.

Cheese - Freshness of New Zealand Cream cheese and home made Lemon Jam.

Chocolate Banana Cheese Cake - Harmony of home made banana jam and New Zealand cream cheese.

The drinks and beverages were said to made from fresh ingredient without any artificial colourings. There are a wide variety of drinks for you to choose from soft drinks, teas (strawberry, berry berry, apple, etc), matcha milk, ginger ale, milkshake, yakult drinks, fresh juices,etc.

This was my favourite of the drinks we ordered.

This is not really of my liking. However, my friend prefers this though, it's fizzy, rather like Soda. Great for those who love soft drinks.

It felt great trying their salad udon after eating so much of strong spices and thick gravy in the past few days. Something light for the taste buds.

The Salad Udon - It's so fresh, love the vegetables, and light taste with mayonnaise as well as a little bit of tuna on top.

The food was okay and the prices were affordable. Quite similar to those other chain stores and branches of cake houses or cafes.

You'll need an ice box for take aways if you live far from the cake house. Bring it from home, or otherwise you can get it from the cake house. The cakes were priced at RM 8.50 per slice and RM 65.00 for a whole cake if I was not mistaken.

For cake ordering, you need to place your order early, 3-6 working days are required to process your order.

New Year's eve at Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur 2010

One of the most happening places in Kuala Lumpur as millions gathered worldwide to ring in 2011.

The sea of people at Bukit Bintang once we arrived there at around 10 pm. The crowd is just building up. There were road closures to accommodate the increasing number of people. We took the lrt and monorail to avoid the traffic chaos. Our journey was hassle free. Furthermore, the stations had extended operations till 2 am.

Highlight of the year.

New Year Eve's Countdown Party by Fly Fm at Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur. Party like never before till new year. With Djs at the scene to heat things up and live broadcast to Fly Fm radio station.

It's raining SNOW?

Where could you find snow in a tropical country like Malaysia.....

Join in the fun. Be sure to get sprayed. Be armed with a snow spray of party spray!

Christmas Celebration at Portuguese Settlement, Malacca 2010

Christmas celebration was held every year at the settlement. Unfortunately, last year it was nationally announced that the celebration was cancelled. I was told that this year, the celebration would be on and had decided to make a trip there on Christmas eve. A local told me that there would be people dancing, partying and performances by the Portuguese people as well as a live countdown.

Well...... no performances this year during eve. Only to discover that this year the celebration had been postponed to the 26th December 2010. Malaysia's National Christmas Celebration was held at the Portuguese Settlement Malacca on 26th December 2010. However, this did not affect the festive spirit. It was all worth the trip at the end of the day.

The sight of Christmas lights and decorations there was breathtaking. Houses were so beautifully decorated with Christmas lights.

Most there on the Christmas eve were kids, teenagers and youngsters. Many we equipped with a snow spray on hand, ready at any moment when the clock strikes 12 midnight. Party sprays was less popular as compared to the latter.

You can find stalls selling Christmas light up hats, reindeer hair bands, mickey shaped light up hair band, angel head band, Santa heads hair bands to Snow Sprays.

We certainly enjoyed ourselves.

And the air was filled with party snow.

Hardly had enough air to breath with all the snow sprays firing into the air.

26th December marks the end of our vacation to Malacca in 2010. We got to drop by for a short for the 26th December, National Christmas Celebration before heading back home. More adults and family can be seen here.

Ushers dressed in beautiful "Baju Kebaya" welcoming the VIPs and guests of honours.

Nonetheless, we didn't get to watch any of the performances before heading back.

The goodies bag we got at the National Christmas Celebration. Have a can of Power Champ, isotonic drink and a bottle of mineral water too actually. Were so deprived of H20, finished it before we got home.

Love the theme this year which brings back great childhood memories of the toys and bears I used to play with. Reminds me as well of the movies like Toy Story, The Christmas Toy and The Nutcracker where all the toys come to live.

There are giant bears almost everywhere around the stage at Centre Court, Ground Floor. So fluffy, soft and nice to hug. It feels so warm this Christmas. I saw a bear with extremely long legs too. It was really crowded that day in the afternoon, difficult to get a photo clear without people blocking the view or walking right in front of you while you were taking a photo.

Come earlier in the morning to avoid the crowd which builds up in the afternoon during weekends.

Wonder why why, this is usually portrayed as the "bad" or "evil" character in toy movies.

Maybe because, popping up all of the sudden just scares people. But, he looks just kind in here.

Meet Santa!

You can Meet Santa and have a 4R photo and present for Santa for a minimum of RM 10. All proceeds from this will be donated to charity. Santa was there from 11-25th December 2010 on Weekday: 12.30pm & 6.30pm and Weekend: 12.30 pm, 4.30 pm & 6.30 pm.

Ushers were even there to try to make everyone smile for the photo, especially the little kids. Equipped with party poppers to cheer kids with an upside down smile! If you brought a camera of your own, you can ask the ushers at the photo taking session to help you take photos. Many families took this opportunity to have a family portrait. The children's Christmas was made extra special with Santa's appearance.

After the photo was taken by the Foto Shangri-La Team, you can get it around 2 hours later or otherwise claim it within a month from the photo booth.

Pandamaran New Village

This is a photo taken at Pandamaran New Village also known as Kampung Baru Pandamaran in Malay, Klang, Selangor from the car window while travelling recently. The skies were brilliant. It was a bright sunny day and hot weather!

Pandamaran New Village is an emerging township which is also the second largest as well as the second oldest Chinese new village in Malaysia.

The origin of the name Pandamaran is closely related to a tropical tree known as Damar. This tree is geographically located in many regions of South East Asia. Its bark yields an unusual clear, pale, yellow damar resins principally used in paints and varnishes. Pandamaran’s original name was Pendamaran. It carries with it the meaning of a place where Damar tree can be found. This proves that this place was rich in the production of damar resin.

Pandamaran's history traces back to year 1950. The village was built after the Malayan Emergency situation. The British colony needed to destroy the communism influence and thus had gathered all the Chinese residents mostly from Kuala Langat and Kuala Selangor. The purpose of this was to keep the inhabitants in and the guerrillas out. The village was surrounded by barbed wire back in the 50s. There were two checkpoints at the where both gates, were opened 6 am and closes at 6 pm.

Today, Pandamaran New Village is served by excellent road connections. There's even a 3-star hotel, sports complex, hockey stadium, and public swimming pool. The distance from other city and township such as Kuala Lumpur is 30 km while the distance from Klang town is 2 km.

Amazing WildLife at Secret Garden 1 Utama

In view of the environmental conservation, rooftop gardens had gained great popularity over the years. These gardens offer a great way to escape and relax ourselves from the concrete jungle. "Secret Garden" which is located in One Utama Shopping Complex, at Bandar Utama Damansara, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, is a treasure trove of various plants from different regions that holds this concept.

In this post, I would to write a short preview for the upcoming post Secret Garden.

Opening Days: Saturday and Sunday
Opening hours: 10am - 6am

Upon arrival, we are greeted by lovely and refereshing flowers. The environment there was splendid. Being there, we've managed to snap a few pictures of the wonderful creatures.

Many authors and bloggers alike had writen about this beautiful garden but not many had talked about the amazing small wildlifes found there. Therefore this would be dedicated entirely to the lovely creatures.

The butterfly flew all the way up to the rooftop. It was 5 storeys high. We managed to capture this beautiful butterful and the best was it was laying eggs. What a lovely suprise! We didnt know until we previewed all the photo in the computer.

This little "guy" had just woke up from his sleep. It was so amazing. We watch it crawled out from the shell.

Satay Capitol and Prawn Noodles

" Sometimes one of the greatest delights of life is food! "

During travel, it's nice to experience the culture and authentic cuisines found in different parts of the world. I went to Malacca town, Malacca, Malaysia few months ago for a two day trip. It was an exciting food tour. I got to try some of the town 's specialty. Had a quick lunch in the afternoon. We had prawn noodles at the town center.

A little spicy. Nevertheless, most locals think that it is not spicy after all. It adds flavour to the noodles and soup.

During the night, we went to the famous Satay Capitol.

It is often crowded especially during the weekends where poeple from all over Malaysia as well as tourists from Singapore and Europe flock to the restaurant.

I found some European backpackers on holiday to Langkawi and had dropped by Malacca to try this gastronomical delight. They said they found out about it in the Food Guide Book.

We started queing around 6 pm and had managed to get a place in the restaurant at around 7.30 pm. Considered lucky and pretty fast actually!! Sometimes you may not even get a place.

Beware of imposters!! Shop owner reminding visitors that they are the only restaurant and there's no other branches!!

Authentic and one of its kind, the original restaurant owner (Maybe grandpa or great grandpa of today's owner?) was the founder of this special cuisine. It had been more than 3 generations of family business . Nevertheless, there are no branch in Malacca or anywhere else.

What is so special about this cuisine lies in the gravy. It is a special sause made of peanuts and other flavourings (not sure, secret recipe of the owner). After we were seated, the worker prepared the pots and poured in the sause. When the time was just right, other ingredients and peanuts were added into the sause.

While waiting for the gravy to boil, we went to get our selections. There are many choices available, mostly of fishballs, dices of meat, sausages. All ingredients are very fresh. These are inserted into sticks.

Our favourite! MYR 80 cents (RM 0.80) per stick for all types. Those in plates are slightly more expensive, around RM 3-5.

In Asian countries especially the Chinese community, they always believe in Yin and Yang balance. Therefore, because the sause may be heaty, so the owner provided customers some cucumbers to cool down our system.

After the sause is boiled, put your choices of sticks in and wait till it is cooked.

Ready to eat! Yummy!!!

Usually, towards the end of your meal the owner will offer you these delicious abalone, prawns and seafood at the same price of MYR 80 cents.

The owner greeted us and we had a short chat. He was very kind and friendly. He gave us some specially brewed coffee of his own collection. That was sometimes New, a very aromatic coffee indeed.

For those who had never tried, it is definetely something not to be missed.

Time: ~ 7am to ~ 9pm

It was an excitement filled day for me at the Putrajaya International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. This was my first year being at the carnival. When we arrived at around 9 am the crowd was already huge and it was difficult to find parking. Colourful eye-catching balloons adorned the sky marking the first showcase of the hot air balloons from various participating countries across the globe. Participating countries are Japan, Belgium, Switzerland, New Zealand, South Korea, The Netherlands, the United States, France and Malaysia. Some of the very unique designs include a pair of floating levi's jeans, the Darth Vader of Star Wars as well as the yummy orange fruit shaped balloon.

The inagural event attracted international tourists and local spectators from all walks of life. This event promised activities for the entire family ranging from children inflatable playground, sphere rides, water ball rides, bargains and colouring competition for kids.

Apart from that, there are other ongoing side programmes, such as photography competition for the photography enthusiasts, remote controlled aircraft display, paramotor showcare, helicopter rides, auto show and petting zoo.

Families were seen taking in the sights and some had picnics at the spot. Some preferred to enjoy the view instead on a beautiful Saturday morning.

There was 5 hot air balloon opened to the public for thethered rides that floated 20 m (according to the official site) above ground. We started queing for the tickets at 2.30pm. Although the ticket selling booth only opens at 6pm, there was already a crowd. By 4pm, the amount of people lining up was overwhelming. Tickets were also limited per day.

Spectators and photography enthusiasts gathered around the Hot Air Balloon area to take photos of unique hot air balloon during the showcase of balloons from participating countries.

I got a chance to get close to the balloon and took a photo of how it looks inside.

Finally, it was our turn after 7 hours (2.30pm - 9.30pm, delayed to 9.30 due to technical difficulties) of painstaking queuing; we got into our hot air balloon basket. It was important to balance the weight of the basket to maintain the hot air balloon at ground level. One in one out, I climbed into the basket as one particiapnt came out while my friend waited to go in as another came out after me. It was hot as the fire was ignited from the burner to induce hot air into the balloon. Nearly burned the head of my tall friend. Just kidding, but the heat felt the greatest for him as he was so close to the fire on top of his head.

As it rises, there was this sudden adrenaline rush. Then, the balloon stopped. We got to experience a bird's eye view. The scenery of Putrajaya at night was breathtaking. Nevertheless, it was too fast. In 10 minutes we were back to ground. Strangely enough, it didnt felt vert high. I feel like as if I was standing from a fifth floor condominium balcony.

Wish we sustained longer in the air. Only regret was there were these strings attached. How I wished that I could cut it and set my balloon free flying higher and higher into the sky.

Anyways, it costs RM 10 for adults and RM 5 for children at two sessions - 8am to 11am and 6pm to 9pm. For those wondering how heavy can the balloon load at any one time, a maximum of 200 kg include the pilot was allowed. So, you can go up as a couple, or a group of three (combination of three girls, or parent with one or two young kids)

For those who missed the boat but still wanted to try out for the rides next year, here are some useful tips:

Dos:

Be early:

Normally, hot air balloon enthusiats will start queuing at 5am for the 1st session. The crowd for the 2nd session starts at 2.30pm.

Bring an umbrella, cap, or fan along. Maybe even a portable chair can be handy?

If you missed the first session, the second one is going to be extremely hot. The area for queing was not shaded. By the time we arrived, the tickets for first session were already sold out. We strated queiuing for tickets at 2.30pm and endured a torturous 3 and a half hour wait under the red hot fiery sun. I was pretty lucky tough.. I found a chair!!

Be alert and fast:

There will be two queues, one for the tickets and another for the hot air balloon rides after you bought the tickets. The queue for the hot air balloon ride starts at 6pm. But be elart where the queue starts and you shall start choosing which balloon of the 5 you want to go up in. Remember that the same crowd who bought the ticket, are going for the hot air balloon as well. Or else, suffer the curse of the long queue again!

Donts:

Beware of night photography!

There were services offered to take photos of you while on the hot air balloon. But they may not be professional photographers although there are in fact using a dslr. I personally had a very bad experience of my first hot air balloon photo. We had paid Rm 25 for our photos taken. Sadly it turned out to be totally black and I meant it literally although it was the best among the 20 pictures taken by the photograher there. We can't see a thing or recognize our faces in the printed 4R photo. Absolutely terrible! Nonetheless, we were cool anyways as it was for charity. Otherwise, the day photography was of acceptable quality.

Do not cut queue or help to cut queue!

We all learnt good manners and civic mindedness in school. While we were queuing, so many had approached us asking for help to buy them one or two tickets. We just couldnt do it. Think about, the rest of the people behind us who endured the hot sun for 4 hours and ended up without tickets. Are we really doing a favour or causing misery to so many others? Tickets are limited per day.

There was this young mother with two kids who had not only cut in once but twice. Once when buying the ticket and second time during the queue for the hot air balloon ride. It cause a commotion among the crowd. Heated arguments broke in. The worst was she insisted she was right in front of her kids, reason being she had asked one of the stranger in the front row to buy her tickets. Likewise, she shall be queuing right behind her ignoring the rest of the crowd. Bad example lady! The authories had to come in to settle the dispute in the end.

Beware of bad weather!

If the weather is not right (raining, going to be heavy rain) maybe you should consider not queuing tickets or even buy them? There are friends of mine who were there, bought the tickets, but don't have the chance to experience the balloon ride as the weather was just bad. Not sure weather they got their money refunded.

Later at night, there was a marching band performance. The highlight of this spectacular event was the special night-glow display where all the balloons glowed like light bulbs, giving a brilliant display of illuminated light in the sky followed.

RAGE Trailblazer..

Last weekend was an unforgettable one. Paticipated in the RAGE Trailblazer competition in Perak. This is an event organised by the Star Publications along with Maybank Graduate Banking for sixth formers and tertiary education students. Being there was like a reunion of my own varsity mates.... So many of our fellow uni mates were there at the competition. Every now and then, you bumped into someone you know!! Before the competition began, everyone was strolling around the Taman DR. recreational park, enjoying the picturesque environment. The overgrown trees bring solace and peace to the environment. Little did we knew that teams are grouped into clusters before the race. Teams were divided into clusters where we were identified by colours, namely, light blue, red, orange, cream, yellow and green. I was an orange. It was really a bright colour! No kidding. .. Before long after registering, 31 teams in a cluster were competing against other clusters.

Many challenging games that require both mental and physical strength were played. The games were inspired by the rich and wonderful history of the glorious town, Ipoh and Papan during the tin mining days. Giant sized abacus, milking from saya beans and tin mining was just to name a few. To add to the fun, financial planning were involved in the games. There were make shift booths where some booths offered loans, some booths offered savings account while another offer items to be rented. Cluster that managed to collect the most amount of money by the end of the preliminary round gains entry to the final round. By the end preliminary round, the Cluster that emerged the top was the light blue team. Orange did not made it to the finals. Nonetheless, we were the top half of the Clusters. Amazing prizes from lucky draws were given to partipants. I had gained many new friends and a group of wonderful cluster mates. We managed to keep contact and keep in touch even after the competition.

During the final round, the light blue team went to ghost town, Papan Perak. Teams relive the glorious days of Papan for the once rich and populated mining town. Teams had to decorate traditional Malay costumes, learn to sing Chinese Opera, research on local heroine Sybil Karthigasu and lots more. Above and beyond all, teams got the chance to experience the rich and diverse culture of Perak. These cultures must be preserved.

In a nutshell, we had a great fun! Teamwork and coordination were essentials.

Natural Sanctuary...

Despite the hectic lifestyle... ... well, just want to say i finally get my day off ...yippee.. where I can shout out loud, "Finally! A holiday!" ... had a holiday retreat few weeks ago with a group of friends to a small town in Perak. (errrmm not exactly small) but definetely way much better than being in KL. A city escape! A few days enjoying life doing nothing at all except sit and relax at my uncle's place. We really enjoyed the sumptous local food such as Chicken Rice, 'Hor Fun' and so much more..

During my trip to Perak, I get a chance to drop by at a few tourists attraction sites. We explored caves and other places around the heart of Perak. Among many others, is a visit Taman D.R. Seenivasagam. The park is named after a prominent lawyer who found the Perak Progressive Party (PPP). Affectionately known Taman DR among locals, this recreational park is located in Ipoh, Perak. It was formerly known as Coronation Park. The place was picturesque.

Holiday? Where are you?

Beep... beep.. beep beep beep BEEP BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP..... Well, I still need the alarm clock. Although it is now actually my semester break, but it almost felt like not having any holiday at all. Being involved in the orientation during the short 3 weeks leave felt like any other normal uni days where you have lectures, tutorials and practical labs.. Everyday was like another manic Monday, having to wake up early before the sun rises to travel two hours to uni and returning home late in the evening. Doing nothing at all sometimes can be really enjoying. Trust me! So, don't complain about your boring television dramas or rotting at home doing nothing at all.. After all, you only get long holiday breaks when you are student. Enjoy your student life! It is definetely, way better than working life.

Nevertheless, the orientation gives you a great experience. Everyone had really put in their efforts to make the orientation events a success. It showcase the importance of teamwork. This is where you can meet new people and make new friends.

Finally, the actual performance day arrived. The original two songs that we've selected was rejected. We've changed the song in the very last minute. Yesterday, my stage fright was really bad. Although it did not turn out good, but we've worked hard and tried our best. We should have no doubt. I am so glad that our friends were really supportive. Thank you so much dear friends. I really meant it from the bottom of my heart.

Mother's Day

Being a mother is a challenging job. As we celebrate Mother's Day, it is interesting to know how this centuries old tradition comes about.

The origin of Mother's Day can be traced back to the spring celebrations in ancient Greece. Celebrations were held in honour of Rhea, Mother of the Gods. During the 1600's, Christians in England celebrated a day to honour Mother Mary. The holiday was eventually expanded to include all mothers by a religious order and thus named as Mothering Sunday. At that time, most of the poor worked as servants for the wealthy. On this special day, servants would be have their day off and encouraged to return home to spend time with their mothers. Very often, a special cake called mothering cake will be bought.

With the passage fo time, this noble tradition ceased slowly due to war and colonist settlement. In the United States, Mother's day was first suggested after the American Civil War by social activist Julia Ward Howe. Howe was horrified by the carnage caused by the Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War. She tried to issue a manifesto for peace at the international peace conferences in London and Paris.

During the Franco-Prussian war in the 1870s, Howe began a one-woman peace crusade and made an impassioned "appeal to womanhood" to rise against war. She began promoting the idea of a "Mother's Day for Peace" to be celebrated on June 2, honoring peace, motherhood and womanhood.

Unfortunately, Howe failed in her attempt to get the formal recognition of a Mother's Day for Peace. Nevertheless, her remarkable contribution was never forgotten. To acknowledge Howe's achievements a stamp was issued in her honour in 1988.

Howe's idea was inspired by Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis, a young Appalachian homemaker who, starting in 1858, had attempted to improve sanitation through what she called "Mothers Friendship Day". Jarvis saved thousands of lives by teaching women in her Mothers Friendship Clubs the basics of nursing and sanitation.

It was Jarvis' daughter, Anna Jarvis however, who finally succeeded in introducing the Mother's Day that we celebrate today. Anna had spent many years looking after her ailing mother. When her mother died in Philadelphia on May 9, 1905, Anna missed her greatly. Anna felt children often neglected to appreciate their mother enough while the mother was still alive.

In 1907, Anna Jarvis took Howe's idea a step further and began to campaign for a nationally recognized Mother's Day. She persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, to celebrate Mother's day on the anniversary of Anna's mother's death which falls on the second Sunday in May. Hence, our Mother's Day holiday as it is now celebrated was born. Jarvis also began the tradition of wearing a carnation in honor or memory of our mothers where a coloured carnation is worn if your mother is still living, while is worn a white one if she is deceased.

Jarvis wrote letters to ministers, politicians and businessman in an effort to make Mother's Day a national event. By 1911, Mother's Day was being celebrated in almost every state in the country. On 9th of May 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed that Mother's Day would be a national holiday to be celebrated annually on the second Sunday in May.

Today, Mother's Day is a day honouring mothers where you acknowledge her contribution in your life and pay tribute to her. It is celebrated on various days in many places around the world.

Spending time with your mother is the best gift for mother's day. I tried something different this year which is to make sushi for my mum instead. Hehe.. The first few sushis was not that pretty. Nonetheless, I had a great mother and daughter time today making sushi. What comes from the heart is priceless.

Another busy day

Although exam's over and the holidays had already begun, there's not much holiday mood in the air. Hehe. Maybe for me only. Really feel like doing nothing at all. Enjoy by being lazy.

I went to uni today. We have to prepare one or two songs to sing during the orientation. This new trend of singing to students to lift up their spirits started last semester. Then, it somehow turned into something like a tradition. Well, otherwise the students will be bored to death listening to talks the whole day. We were asked to perform again. XD.

Chosing a song can be a big headache sometimes. Anyway, after shortlisting the potential songs, we finally selected three. What song? Hehe.. It's for you to find out during the orientation. Hopefully, there won't be another shortcircuit or electricity breakdown on the actual day. After practicing the whole afternoon.. really don't feel like talking right now.. (+_+) Hehe.. Lost my voice a little and it sort of sound a bit coarsy right now.. Just want to give my poor voice box a short rest.

Besides that, I went to search for sponsors today. It was a tough job. There's so much to learn. Accompanied by another friend, we went to a few shops. But the persuasion was to no avail. Most refused while some will only give an answer later. Most probably there won't be any reply.

The exams are finally over. Today's paper was Pengajian Malaysia. I went to Times Square right after to relax. Somehow, it didnt help much. The shopping tempatation was no longer irresitable. The many nice and beautiful things there that usually attracts me cant seem to grab my attention at all. I guess I've used up all my energy in the past two weeks. Usually, I'll be so energetic after the last paper. But this time just really tired. ... At last, I ended up coming back home not long afterwards. (+_+) Sleepy.. Extremely lack of energy. Need some time to recharge.

I'll be keeping a low profile this few weeks.. Hehe.. (^_^) Finals are drawing closer and there's so much to cover. There's so little time but so much to do. So, I'll be hiding in my little sanctuary.
